How Big Do Labrador Retrievers Get?

Expert AuthorHere’s another bit of information on Labradors that prospective owners forget to ask before falling in love with a puppy: how big do Labrador Retrievers get? All puppies are little and adorable, but they all grow. Labrador Retrievers grow a lot! We know that, but really – how big do Labrador Retrievers get by the time they are full grown?

American Kennel Club Information on Labradors

The American Kennel Club (AKC) information on Labradors begins with this description of the breed:

“The Labrador Retriever is a strongly built, medium-sized dog.”

If that were the only information on Labradors they gave, you might picture a dog the size of a Border Collie. But that is not the only information on Labradors they give. If you read further on their website, you will find more detail.

* AKC measures the Labrador’s size at the withers, which is the ridge between the shoulder bones of the Lab – near the base of the neck in back. A full-grown male Labrador will be 22 1/2 to 24 1/2 inches. A female Labrador, when full-grown will be between 21 1/2 and 23 1/2 inches.

* An adult male Labrador Retriever that is in working condition (not overweight) will weigh between 65 and 80 pounds. An adult female Labrador Retriever that is in working condition will weigh between 55 and 70 pounds.

Missing Information on Labradors

What’s missing from the AKC information on Labradors? You know how tall the dog is at the withers, but remember that its head will rise several inches above that. If you have a toddler in your home, the dog may be nearly as tall as the baby. They can kiss easily!

Also missing from the AKC information on Labradors is what that weight really means in your home. The toddler mentioned above will not weigh nearly that much. The Lab will easily be able to knock the baby down. It will knock down other things as well, and you will want to train it early and well to avoid damage.

The third missing item from the AKC information on Labradors is the energy that is packed into that height and weight. Lovable Labradors are bursting with energy. They love to run and play, so any information on Labradors must include their immense need for exercise.

Finally, remember that larger dogs like Labs need more food and more space. Be sure you have a yard or living room big enough to meet his needs!

  2. Charles Mace says:

Hi, I have noticed that your article has pictured labs at a certain weight and size. I believe that this is correct for most labs. However my sister has a lab that is 98lbs.I no this sounds big by any standard but he is 4 inches taller then a normal lab. Is this the exception to the rule? He runs approximately 3to7 miles at least everyday and is 5 years old. His name is trigger (GO FIGURE) Thank you for your reply

  7. Vivian says:

I have a chocolate lab, he’s 6 years old and 125 pounds. He’s pure bred. I’m still wondering if my dog is the biggest lab yet.

  8. Cathy says:

My 15 week old akc registered yellow lab is 35 pounds. My vet says he will be about 150 pds. Is that possible for a lab?

  9. Cole D says:

The weights given above are the AKC recognized weights, which means these are the weights that a registered lab should be to qualify as a good representative of the breed. We have bred several litters of labs between registered dogs and the resulting adults have turned out as big as 130lbs in healthy body form. This is by no means uncommon, its just not what a “show” dog should be according to the AKC. So, to Cathy, 150 lbs is a stretch, but possible, and most likely results from people picking the biggest and most cuddly pups from litters and breeding those dogs on down the line.

  10. Fay says:

Our lab is 8 months old and weighs 75 pounds already.

  11. Me says:

My black lab puppy is 7 months old and already 85lbs. He is huge! I was told he would grow to about 120lbs. His paws are gigantic. He runs about 3 miles a day with me, so he’s certainly not overweight.

  12. Bill says:

I have owned labs in the past that averaged about 70 to 90 lbs. I also hunt with a friend that has a male and female chocolate lab. Both dogs are in top shape. The female tips the scales at 123 pounds. The male is a solid 161 lbs. When he told me how much they weighed I called b.s. but after weighing them both at the warehouse where I work he proved to be accurate -1 lb. I have no idea if the male is a freak of nature or very selective breeding. My friend breeds the two and sells the pups for as much as $1500.00. They are EXCELLENT water dogs. I’m sure they will never win an AKC event but who cares?…these dogs are amazing.

  19. Tyler says:

my black lab is 25 pounds at 4 months old. her mother is 65 pounds and her father is 80 pounds. anyone know about how big she will be?

  20. Ellen says:

I have a Black Lab that will turn 16-(human)years-old in 12 days. He’s normally been around 120 and fairly tall, even for a lab, although he wasn’t fat or ever really sick. (I know, I have been blessed. :-) Lately, he’s started “choking” a bit when eating dry food. Is this a sign that I should switch him to canned food instead? (He eats a lot of people food, and always has, but doesn’t seem to have any trouble with that.) I thought he might be having trouble chewing (although his teeth look pretty good still) or the food might simply be too dry. Please let me know here or at the email address above. Thanks!!!

  21. cesar says:

i have a black lab that i rescued when he was 4 months, he is now 5 years old and is at 65 lbs.

i have heard that english labs are often bigger and heavier than american labs or field labs wich are the smaller ones since they are mostly for hunting. how true is that?

  22. vic says:

my pup is 7months and weighs about 80 pounds

  23. Anthony says:

I have a 5 month old chocolate lab and he weighs 75lbs! and his sister weighs 55. He is on track for 130lbs his feet are gigantic, we knew he was going to be freakishly huge even at 7 weeks…

  24. Barb says:

My Emma is a 2 year old female and is 100 lbs and seems to be growing every day. She is a chocolate gentle giant that loves her hugs and kisses on a daily basis. Honestly, I don’t know if she willl fit on the couch with us much longer and takes up most of it. She is worth her weight in gold.

  25. Jonathan Dallion says:

My black labrador retriever just got back from the vet, and he weighed in at 167 lbs. The vet said he is by far the largest labrador he has ever seen, I also have a chocolate female who is 84 lbs, and he completely dwarfs her when standing side by side. He is probably 5″ taller at the hind, and has very little fat on him, he is pure bred, he just never stopped growing. Has anyone seen a lab bigger?

  26. Cathy says:

My Black Labrador is 3 years old and weighs in at 146lbs. He is not overweight and has a good waist.
